Why Darbhanga Is Where Makhana Begins

Bihar grows roughly 85 to 90 percent of India's makhana, and Darbhanga, Madhubani, Purnea and Katihar together account for about four-fifths of what the state produces. Set up here and the seed is down the road: lower freight, fresher lots, and the chance to look at a batch before you pay for it.

You'll also have company in the neighbourhood. Darbhanga houses ICAR's National Research Centre on Makhana, and the National Makhana Board, launched in September 2025 with its headquarters in Purnea, is working on production, processing and marketing for the sector.
